Lessons from the DNC
Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the DNC in Chicago. And, while there are LOTS of things I could say about the experience itself, I want to focus on the leadership lessons that were a thread throughout the 4 nights.
Leadership lessons from the DNC:
1) Give purpose. Set a clear vision and reinforce the plan to achieve it.
2) Widen your tent. Invite diverse opinions, perspectives and powerful voices to help you reach your goal.
3) Be authentic. If you mean what you say, say what you mean. Express yourself. People will respond to the real you.
4) Set the culture. When your people are feeling dread, help them see that JOY is possible.
5) Leave your ego at the door. It’s never, ever about you.
6) Let others do the talking. Some of the most powerful messages won’t come from you, but from those you are there to represent.
7) Make the ask. This is crucial – – if you have people engaged, make sure they are asked to #dosomething.
Oh, and wear comfortable shoes as much as possible. Sometimes when you’re one of many passionate team members, you may need to lead from the bleacher seats. #iykyk
